Dr. Robert Somers

Dr. Robert Somers is a co-founder of 2rw, serves as President and is the principal responsible for 2rw energy services. He is also a professional engineer registered in many states throughout the country, a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and a LEED accredited professional. Bob has served on the Board of Directors for the Virginia Sustainable Building Network since 2004.

Bob has worked in the energy field over thirty years, for both public and private sector clients. His experience has ranged from basic research into thermal energy storage to energy audits of large complexes including the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. For many years, Bob spearheaded 2rw’s technical support services for the Virginia Division of Energy, conducting training sessions for technical and non-technical audiences, developing guidelines for a photovoltaic manufacturing grants program, and authoring technical manuals for engineers and architects.

Bob received Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the Pennsylvania State University in 1975 and 1977, respectively. In 1983, he received a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Virginia.


Robert Crowell

Mr. Robert Crowell co-founded the firm 2rw Consultants, Inc. and has served as Vice President since. Bob is a LEED Accredited Professional and a member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, the American Society of Plumbing Engineers, the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America, the International Code Council, and the National Fire Protection Association.

Bob’s focus on energy systems, environmental issues and the built environment began with his University education and has continued throughout his business practice. He has been adjunct faculty at the University of Virginia Graduate School of Architecture since 1999, where he teaches a graduate level building systems course. At 2rw, he is responsible for all aspects of mechanical and electrical systems design and quality control. Bob’s design work is focused on the use of LEED practices and efficient technologies such as ground source heat pumps, photovoltaics, and daylighting. He has experience with a wide range of facilities including education, health care, multi-family housing, athletic, corporate and military buildings. 

Bob received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Virginia in 1981.
